There are still vestiges of the old Van Nuys in many areas. Emelita Street, west of Hazeltine, north of Burbank, is one of those places.
For three blocks, neat and modest homes with tidy gardens, clean sidewalks, and a grassy meridian, provide a glimmer of hope that the California dream might still be possible.
For some lovely reason, few of the houses have iron fences, or concrete front yards, or Hummers and RV’s parked on the driveway. The styles range from bunaglows to Spanish to 50’s ranches.
This is one of those pockets of pleasantness. It is overlooked by those who can’t imagine that tolerating “diversity” in Van Nuys might actually stand for something other than how the PC crowd defines it.
Hey, that’s my hood. It is a nice street. We’ve gotten some of the history of the street from longtime residents. That two-story (colonial-esque?) house on Emelita, just east of Tyrone, was moved to the spot from somewhere in Hollywood or L.A., I believe.
Any street with actual sidewalks is OK in my book (ours has none — only the dirt from last year’s sewer repairs, which a year and a half of “street cleaning” has done nothing to alleviate. I’ll have to get out there with my broom.)
