Van Nuys Golf Course: Swinging Upmarket.

Driving along Victory west of Woodley, one of the prettiest and most relaxing sights is the Van Nuys Golf Course . The facility, while dated, has a congenial and civilized set-up along with an eighteen hole par 3 course and a nine hole executive course.

It is owned by Los Angeles World Airports, which (logically) also owns the Van Nuys Airport just north of the golf course. The Daily News reports that LAWA is in talks with Ready Golf Centers of Encino who want a 30 year lease and plan to invest $5 million dollars worth of upgrades including an arcade and miniature golf course.

The article also quotes Craig Kessler of the Public Links Golf Association:

“We have been trying for years to get someone to come in here and revive this course,” Kessler said. “We think it’s a valuable community and golf asset and we endorse the concept of what Ready Golf is trying to do as long as it continues to remain affordable and accessible.”

Since Tiger Woods, golf has become much more of a younger man’s sport. 30 years ago, only senior executives golfed, and young people played tennis. Now only old people play tennis, and the links are full of goatees and retro plaid shirted dudes who take their fashion cues from Penguin and Ben Sherman.

That’s some of what you see at the Van Nuys Golf Course, and hopefully this casual and affordable course will not be Rick Caruso-ized.
