The LA TImes reports today that work has begun near the Red Line’s Wilshire and Western stop on a 22 story condominium that is a partnership between the MTA and private developers.
Imagine that! A residential building convenient to a train line. This could destroy the Los Angeles we’ve grown to love and endure.
One of the earlier developments in Hollywood is around the Hollywood/Western station. Above the station is the low-income housing that looks like the tiled mess that is the platform. Across the street is a combo strip mall/apartment building with a Ralphs, Ross, Jamba Juice and a few other stores.

Much of the Hollywood development I have heard about is residential in concept.
The entire block surrounding the Hwd/Vine station will be residential, except the re-do of the Taft building at Hwd/Vine, meaning either apts, hotel or condos. A building at the corner of Selma and Vine, not sure if NE or SE corner, will house a Whole Foods Mkt on the ground floor.
The office need is great in the Hwd. area, yet the former ofc. building at Sunset/Vine is going condos, with the condom already surround the entire building.
The former AAA banner/Music+ building on Vine south of Sunset will become K&L Wine/Liquor store from SFO.
Most development at Highland/Hwd. will be residential or retail in scope.

Ron – it will be interesting to see whether the Hollywood development will increase incoming traffic. As I understand it, Hollywood is short on office space, and a lot of the development is meant to address that need.

There are massive amounts of development near the Hollywood/Vine and Hollywood/Highland stations. Also, the Wilshire corridor (Purple Line, I think?) metro line, whenever that is complete, goes right through the Miracle Mile, which is also seeing a lot of development.

I live close to the station.
The building you see behind the Wiltern theater is going to be The Mercury. It’s a condo converted from an office building that has been sitting empty since the Northridge earthquake.
There’s also two other developments being built. One is across the street from the station, on the site of the old Woo Lae Oak restaurant. The other is next to the bus layover zone. The two-story brick building is fenced off and scaffolded and will be razed.
