This Can’t Be Chicago!

Joe Tabacca for The New York Times

The NY Times writes that this summer in Chicago there is an ongoing party on Lake Michigan full of bikini wearing, beer drinking girls and muscular, fun loving guys who meet up in their boats and let loose.

“Hundreds of boats, from million-dollar yachts to speedboats to fishing dinghies, had merged with rubber rafts, water trampolines and makeshift docks into roughly five loosely connected chains bobbing across a no-wake zone unofficially known as the Playpen.

Fueled by wealthy boat owners and the young women they and their boats can attract, the daytime parties have become a magnet for local nightclub owners and promoters who use the scene to draw people to their clubs once the sun sets. Last year club owners upped the ante by ferrying D.J.’s out to spin during the day.”

It seems you don’t have to move out of Chicago to experience the LA lifestyle anymore.

  1. Nothing in common with L.A. Note in the Chicago picture there are not scummy gang members everywhere, a la Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, Magic Mountain, etc.

  2. You know, I was just on the lakefront yesterday, and I didn’t see any of this. I was at DuSable Harbor, though.

There are drunken fratboy-types in every American urban area–in Los Angeles, you find them in Brentwood, the South Bay, and most of coastal Orange County–but the huge concentration of them within the city of Chicago is particularly notable. Honestly, you couldn’t pay me to live in Lincoln Park or Wrigleyville, because I’d have to deal with these types pissing on my stoop every weekend.
