Haunted by Beth Einhorn., originally uploaded by Here in Van Nuys.

Yesterday, I was walking around this neighborhood during my “lunch hour” and happened to meet a woman who was shooting with her Canon for possible film locations.

I told her about a house I had just seen on Troost (about six blocks west) that was “an all American place” with a picket fence, mature trees and a tire swing hanging from a tree.

She told me that she was scouting for “K-Mart” and that this would involve a kid getting off a school bus and Mom meeting him in front of the house.

She wanted to know exactly where the perfect sounding home was, and I told her I would drive back with her and show her exactly where it was. I had parked in front of that home and this was a way of getting a ride back.

“No thanks,” she said. “That would be TOO WEIRD”. She got into her black coupe car and drove off.

I guess my expensive camera and her expensive camera and the broad daylight of Studio City and my clean shaven, white face were all too ominious for this female.

  1. even children are taught not to get in a car with a stranger, regardless of the expensiveness of his camera, time of day, or the sweetness of his proffered candy… why should a adult woman not be as cautious?

  2. umm, i know you’re not a female … but what female gets in a car with an unknown male?

    i’m surprised you were surprised.

  3. I think you’re reading a lot into this. I’m merely reporting how people relate to each other. I’m not making judgments about race.

  4. Uh, what? Your post was about Studio City, right? You imply that your white face should have tipped the woman off that you are “OK.” Your white clean shaven face should have made it ok for her to take a stranger in the car. Did you mean otherwise? Again, I don’t get it.

  5. Yes, terribly racist. I actually am so racist that I feel safer walking around Studio City at night than Watts or South Central. I understand my feelings are also shared with about 99% of my fellow Angelenos of all races.

  6. She did exactly the right thing. Ted Bundy anyone? White, clean shaven etc…

Are you racist or what? I don’t get you.

  7. Mary-
I think the French house with the English windows is very intriguing. I have a feeling it’s just as old (pre-WWII) as the other house. It looks like a backlot building from the old 20th C. Fox sets.

  8. As cute as I you are, I would have done the same.

I noticed the French looking home that is in your flickr photo set, it’s very close to the Troost house from your previous post…anyway I have been lusting after that house for more that a year now. I would LOVE to remodel that property, it needs some serious TLC but it has so much potential!
