How Do You Spel in Van Neyes?

Norah, a reader of this blog, sent me this delightful photograph of a convenience store on Kester, just north of Van Owen, advertising “Drive True” service. A woman who works there told me that the sign means a driver can remain in his car, and the store will bring the groceries to the vehicularly imprisoned customer.

They also offer an after school tutor for English at very low hourly rates. (Not)

  1. I actually lived on Hartland and Kester growing up. When I was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s there – the dairy was owned by a very nice couple that had been in a concentration camp – being a young girl and seeing the numbers tatooed on their arms was a great eyeopener. It was our neighborhood store.

  2. Yeah, it’s Vanowen, isn’t it?

I’m thinking this is a fast-typist- kinda typo, right, Andrew?

I don’t like the vision of Hummers idling away while the order is filled, either.

But you could re-frame this post as a salute to the Valley of the past, where these drive-thru places were invented!

(Love your site, tho, Andrew! Don’t stop.)

  3. Did you misspell vanowen on porpoise? Also, maybe they mean “Drive True” as in “drive with honestly and integrity.” I believe that with the kind of no-hassle drive true service Alta Dena offers, a person can receive their groceries stress-free and direct all of their attention on being a responsible motor vehicle operator.
