I stopped to shop at Jons on Sepulveda and Vanowen today.
I bought seven items:
1. Eggs
2. Pita Bread
3. Pita Bread
4. Lemons
5. Oranges
6. Pineapple
7. Bananas
Jons packed these seven small items in four large plastic bags.
When I shop at Trader Joes, it seems that two dozen items can fit into one paper bag.
Jons and 99 Ranch Market compete to see who can use the most plastic bags. Why are they so ignorant about the environmental consequences?
Andrew, perhaps these bags are biodegradable? If not, pick yourself up a few canvas bags (usually sold at or near the check-out counter) that you can bring with you every time you shop.
I must concede: those plastic bags come in handy from time to time.

Have you ever thought the lower income and/or immigrant patrons of these markets might actually RE-USE these plastic bags? Or is it just us middle-classers who are so apt to throw things away?

I’d venture to guess that Jons customers tend to walk their produce home, while Trader Joes customers load it into their car.
It’s likely a durability issue and is cheap insurance against people losing/damaging their goods on the way home.
I agree it’s no good for the environment, but social/environmental responsibility isn’t exactly what dictates purchasing decisions around here, unlike Trader Joe’s customers who are (sometimes hipocritically so) concerned about such issues.

Jons is awesome. They have Mexican coke with real Sugar in a glass bottle.
