Cityscapes

cityscapes

We sit in traffic staring at the red taillights in front of us. Los Angeles at its most irritating. Artist Scott Yeskel perceives a different reality, a glimmering, glowing blur of a second snapped off and preserved on canvas. His work, much of which chronicles the everyday banality of our city–boxy apartments, smoggy skies, palms silhouetted against the sunset–is fresh, striking, sensitive and an alternative way of seeing reality.

He brings soul to the soulless and life to the streets where people do not walk.

American Beauty.

American beauty.

Orion Avenue, south of Victory, west of Sepulveda, is a bucolic and idealized development of spacious Colonial homes on ample lots. Rose gardens, picket fences, mature trees, and sun dappled lawns provide a background often used for filming.

According to one longtime resident, whom I met fetching his morning paper with an Irish Setter at his side, the homes were built on former walnut groves in the late 1940’s by three partners who later had a falling out. As a result, Orion is uniquely distinguished. Neighboring streets are less picturesque.

In the 1950’s, nearby stables allowed horseback riding into the Sepulveda Dam area, well before the 405 (San Diego) Freeway was built. Other lost commercial buildings included a “country” type shopping center built around an open green; and the “Sepulveda” drive-in theater.

Some of the homeowners are related, and there is a strong block association to protect the safety and serenity of the street. June and Ward Cleaver would feel at home here.
