San Fernando Valley mystery photo.

Diane sent me an email asking if I knew the location of this photo, taken somewhere in the San Fernando Valley around 1960.

Does anybody recognize this area? Mr. Roderick, if you are out there, you may speak…….

  1. There was a Woolworths on the east side of lankershim until the 1980, right in the middle of what is now NoHo.

The Karls is a show store chain. The Coast could be a Coast federal Savings. What pins it to Lankershim for me is the next building, the green one with the ceiss-cross design. That storefront may still be there; it became an antiques store in the 1970s.

Perhaps Sav-On corporate offices could tell us where their locations were in the early 1960s.

  2. If that were around 19725 Sherman Way, Canoga Park, 91306, maps.google.com/maps?q=19725+Sherman+Way,+Canoga+Park,+91306&ll=34.201243,-118.562543&spn=0.002478,0.007838&t=h&hl=en

there’d be single family homes on the left, and the Savon in the background would be at a different catholic church than the one I mentioned here:

  4. Could be Sherman Way in Reseda or Canoga Park. The third sign on the right, a green one, reads, “Badlands” and there is a company with that name at: 19725 Sherman Way, Canoga Park, 91306. Except that “Badlands” sounds like a gay bar to me, and they didn’t have such places around 1960.

  5. I believe it is Sherman Way looking west toward Reseda Blvd. I compared it to a photo in CSUN’s San Fernando Valley Digital Library.
