Van Nuys Pursuit Ends In Officer-Involved Shooting

(CBS) VAN NUYS, Calif. Los Angeles police Thursday shot and wounded a man who allegedly opened fire on officers after leading them on a brief car chase, authorities said.

No officers were injured in the shoot-out, which occurred about 9:30 a.m. on Friar Street west of Kester Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Karen Smith of the media relations office said.

The wounded man, 19-year-old Felipe Sanchez, was taken to a hospital in stable condition and was expected to survive, police said.

LAPD Deputy Chief Michael Moore said two officers from the Van Nuys Station were on patrol when they started chasing a brown, 1981 Oldsmobile that was occupied only by its driver.

“As the officers pursued the individual, backup units arrived, as did a supervisor,” Moore said late Thursday morning near the shooting scene.

“The vehicle was pursued into the 14900 block of Friar (Street), where the suspect stopped his vehicle. He exited his vehicle and immediately fired upon the officers with a small-caliber handgun. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect,” Moore said.

“We do have impacts we believe from the suspect’s weapon that was fired at the officers on the driver’s door of the primary vehicle,” Moore said.

“Again, this is very preliminary as far as the information I have for you,” Moore said. “Force Investigation Division personnel are arriving and they’ll be conducting a full investigation to determine the full facts of this case.”

Moore said the car chase took about 3 minutes.

“In this area of the San Fernando Valley, just a few short weeks ago, an officer was shot and injured by a gang member, and this is the seventh officer-involved shooting that has occurred … so far (this) year,” Moore said. “Last year at this time, we had two,” Moore said.
