I Will Never Understand the Middle East.

Now Al Queda linked guerillas, allegedly supported by Syria, are holed up in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon as factional fighting rages on. Lebanon has kept the Palestinians in camps for the last 60 years, lest they leave and become normal citizens of Lebanon, rather than symbols of Israeli callousness.

Meanwhile, Israel withdraws from the Gaza Strip, leaving it to be administered and governed by the Palestinians, and Hamas in turn decides to send rockets back into Israel proper. So peace is only possible if Israel leaves Palestinian lands, but once the Jews go, the war is still on.

The U.S. fights on in Iraq to make sure that the country survives, even as Iraq is divided between different factions of Islam which kill each other for no practical end. These same self-killing Islamists are supported by the Sunni Saudis to the West and the Shiite Persians to the East. Iran and Saudi Arabia are in a struggle to make sure that their armed proxies hold onto power in neighboring lands, even as these same proxies vow to destroy the infidel enemy (Sunni or Shiite, Jew or American , Christian or Hindi).

The Islamic world is nuts, but the bigger nuts are those who want to do business with these people just so we can continue to ride in our petrol guzzling SUVs.

Death and insanity march on as real people die for a fictional God.

  1. Doug and TorontoVet say:

Just a correction, the camp in question is near Tripoli in northern Lebanon in case anyone calls you on it…

As for the rest: careful, don’t let them hear you in San Fran or on campus.

  2. And which part of the world are you thinking of that doesn’t have businessmen or outsiders coming in? Nobody makes anyone blow themselves up.

You seem to forget that there were no proxy wars nor vengeful refugees before the businessmen came in and started messing with the Middle East in the first place(the 1870’s or 1953, depending on who’s counting). To think how many people’s lives a simple black liquid mixed with greed could screw over…
