For anyone who hoped that next year’s election for a new President might deliver us from the darkness of the current regime, the latest developments are not encouraging. We are again at that bottomless pit of religion and bigotry.

There is plastic Mitt Romney, trying his damnest to be truly conservative and Christian (which he is) by blasting Huckabee for releasing a prisoner early who went on to kill a man. Romney is also tough on illegal immigrants, those wandering, poor Christians from down south who come here for a better life.

Huckabee, a former fat man preacher who gladly took many thousands of gifts while governor of Arkansas, and has a last name that sounds like a cheap chain of greasy spoons, is more compassionate about “illegals” but has a world view of the universe the begins and ends in the New Testament. He disavows Darwin and thinks guns and the gas chamber are wonderful while remaining staunchly pro-life.

Every discussion of politics in America is essentially reduced to the simplest falsehood it seems. People are convinced, once they have decided on the wrong choice, and then the country moves forward on that policy. So we invaded Iraq, even though it never put us in mortal danger, and we will spend $2 trillion there, even as our own nation lacks health care for all.

And who can stand the stupid hatred that is directed towards Mormons? From what I’ve seen of them, they are a mostly upstanding, clean living, industrious and helpful nation of believers. What exactly makes them any more threatening than that other chain smokin’, burger scarfin’, whisky lovin’ Christian creed which once hung nooses from trees, builds prisons non-stop, seceded from our Union, votes for war and against women, and continues to drag our country down into the lowest levels of Western civilization?
