Organized flood-control measures along the LA River began after severe flooding in 1914.

A comprehensive flood control plan was proposed in 1931, but went unfunded due to the Great Depression.

The Army Corps of Engineers’ involvement came after the New Year’s Day floods of 1934.

The project was already well underway (though clearly, not completely finished) when flooding struck again in 1938.

The project was completed in 1941, and LA hasn’t seen a major flood since.

I believe the ’38 Storms were part of the reason the Army Corps of Engineers sadly cemented the L.A. River. Stay dry. 🙂
