Closed to the Public., originally uploaded by here in van nuys.

This is a well proportioned, older home on Hamlin St. in Van Nuys.

Serving as a rental, it has seen the last of the old tenants move out, and seems to be unoccupied. Or perhaps it is serving as someone’s home. I don’t know. The yard is neglected. The shades are pulled down.

A very ugly sign hangs from the house with a warning: “This property closed to the public. No entry without permission.”

“This property closed to the public. No entry without permission” is a Los Angeles-ism for No Trespassing.

I’ve never seen the phrase elsewhere, but it’s common all around L.A.

Google directed me to this: http://www.lacity.org/atty/Securing_Our_Neighborhoods/CNAP/Trespass_Authorization_Brochure.pdf which explains the way Los Angeles Municipal Code 41.24 works to allow a property owner to legally deny to trespassers.

That’s a nice photo. Good choice to show it in B/W. Is the house for sale?
