No More Exchanges, originally uploaded by Camera Ed.

At the same time that they are ripping out the soul of Studio City with uninspired, grotesque condom-iniums, they have also removed the sign that stood here since 1944.

  1. Actually, the Thorsch’s would still own Studio City Camera Exchange, even in this changing marketplace, but Ron, the son, died earlier this year from cancer and the father, Bernie, is elderly and ill.

  2. Ritz and Harrys are nice but they don’t compare. It’s sad that historic stores and traditionnal landmarks of SC as well as green spaces, tend to disappear to the profit of more
boring cell phone stores or condo devts. This photo store was an landmark for decades and a haven of photo hardware. I have heard the (unconfirmed) rumor that they have closed operations not because of the popular belief that SLR business could not compete with
digital, but rather just because of the sickness of one of the owners. In any case the result is that the store and beautiful sign are now gone.

  3. Harry’s camera is still around… surprisingly. Ritz opened up down the street. Prime Studio City Ventura real estate is unfortuately no longer fit for a camera store that focuses on film equipment. It’s just a sign of the times. It was inevitable… sad, but true. They should resurrect the sign, though, for historical reference. As for the clothing store moving in, no comment.

  5. Show of hands here; Who remembers:

    Buddy Toys next door,
Coast Hardware, then Nathans Hot Dogs across the street,
Joe Woos Chinese food across the street.
