Reader Boyd Kelly sent me a link where one can find many old time images of Burbank.

They show an all-white, all-American town, baked in sunshine; a place of boys and men in close-cropped hair, girls in braids, and women in dresses. Magnolia, Hollywood Way, Victory, Olive, Alameda, San Fernando Road: all the storied and exciting locations, sprinkled with cops, firemen, government officials, soda jerks, grease monkeys and the common folk. Lives lived out alongside the train tracks, or inside the studio grounds, saluting the flag, and kneeling in front of the cross.

Aviators and movie makers, weapons makers and homemakers, ball players and ice-cream eaters, swimmers and parade goers, Nixon rallies and Nazi gatherings….yes, this is Burbank as it was….and perhaps Burbank as it still is.

    This society, particularly California/LA/Hollywood, has become so politically and cultural liberal, or [quote, unquote] progressive, that current trends not only are likely to remain, they’re likely to become more extreme.

    In the meantime, the progressives will remain progressive, in their voting habits and feel-good attitude. But if circumstances become too unpleasant (or rough and tumble) even for them, they’ll merely pack their suitcases and move to another part of the country.

    And then the cycle will begin all over again.

      What some fail to realize is that any society must rest upon the bedrock of law and order.

      The current condition of Van Nuys, is above all, a breakdown of law, which ignores the criminal migration of illegals into California. Political correctness demands that we allow those who speak Spanish a certain allowance above and around the law so that “prejudice” does not rear it ugly head.

      Our schools, law enforcement, health care system…every one of these institutions is held hostage to the enabling of illegal immigration and the enslavement of migrant workers who are paid under the table, and are also abused by any employer who cares only for cheap labor.

    although the attributes of old time burbank–a fear of god, police presence, homemakers, men and women who take pride in their well-groomed appearances, etc.–smack of homogenization, burbank as you portray it contains everything modern day van nuys (inarguably a cesspool compared to the burbank of the 50’s or the present) lacks. i, for one, would take the salad days of 50’s burbank any day.

      Agreed. And I would take the Van Nuys of 60 years ago over the one of today.
